This morning I am thinking of the fine young actor Anton Yelchin and how he would make a fantastic SteamPunk.
Anton has been in the movies The House of D (directed by David Duchovny), Alpha Dog and most recently Charlie Barlett where he plays a rock and roll transfer student from a private school to a public school. I say rock and roll, only because he's got the adittude. Next up, he will be playing the role of young Chekov in the upcoming Star Trek film directed by J.J. Abrams. It looks to be a real kicker. I just hope Abrams doesn't destroy the Star Trek I know and Love.
Films that I recognize as being "SteamPunk"
Tim Burton's Batman
Dark City
Blade Runner
The City of Ember
The 5th Element
I first heard the term from my good friend Rob Murphy who himself is a little SteamPunk in a rock and roller sense. He's on the high end of it's fashion, for sure. Apparently there is a club in L.A. designed to be SteamPunkish. Go check it out if you get the chance.
The word SteamPunk reminds me of two other things. 1) Billy Idol's album CyberPunk and 2) Daft Punk's song Steam Machine.
I would love to create some album covers for such style.
Also, Arkham Asylum would be very SteamPunk on the inside. It's colonial on the outside / punk on the inside.
Now, back to Anton Yelchin. If he got himself a couple of drum sticks, labeled them as his own and started tic-tic-taking on some old rusty pipes somewhere, he might get the inspiration that he might need to achieve his next personal goal. You are writing down your goals, aren't you? Hell, why not make an Album for yourself called SteamPunk. Hmmm, sounds like a good idea to me. What other sounds could I incorporate into that album?

Don't forget to write some good lyrics. I'll make the music video!
That's enough for now, I suppose. Gotta get out and excercise my body.

P.S. Don't forget to Multi-Task.
Dear, Rogue.
ReplyDeleteI like your Steampunk reference. Do any of these three qualify?
1. Escape From New York
2. Strange Days (1995)
3. Reign of Fire
Moulin Rouge does not qualify.
Please to clarify.
